Reaction to Orosa – Nakpil: Malate

To admit that one is a member of the third sex is not easy.

Filipinos nowadays are considered liberated. More of us already accept the reality that people who belongs to the third sex are around us. I, myself, am close to people who are gay, bisexual and lesbian. I have friends who openly admit to others that they prefer loving their own kind.

I remember the first time that I was exposed to this issue was in elementary. Since I studied in an all-girls school, there are a lot of lesbians in the group where I belong. Some friends of mine commit to the same sex relationship. I accepted it without question, not knowing that I will be close to people who have the same taste.

Orosa-Nakpil discussed issues about sexually transmitted diseases and how members of the third sex are exposed to this. I think and firmly believe that since they are much into experimenting since that this issue is not thoroughly accepted, they tend to act before thinking. They do not practice safe sex and if ever that they acquire diseases, they choose to spread it instead of teaching others on how to prevent it. But I firmly believe that members of the third sex are not the only ones who are prone to these. Even ‘straight’ people are also exposed to these. Perhaps, this issue is closely associated to the third sex because of discrimination. Even if we claim that we accept the third sex, there are people who are close minded and consider it as a sin, especially if we base it in religion.

My close friend and I formulated a theory, perhaps being gay, lesbian and bisexual is a disorder. Emotion is controlled by the Hypothalamus which is found in the brain. It is concentrated in the Amygdala. If the brain is the one that controls the emotions, it is also the one responsible for the stimulators of the feeling a person may feel towards another. Being gay is not a choice. It is felt and not forced. There are factors that we may consider to know why there are people who fall in love with the same sex. One is environmental factors, heredity and the chemical composition of the body.

Though we are not sure why this happens, we should know that people who belong to the third sex should be treated the way we treat other normal human beings. It is never their fault that they had the taste for their own kind. We should never treat them with discrimination and we should understand them. We should never judge them and consider them as sinners because nobody in this world is clean. All of us have flaws so we should never throw a stone on anybody. If we will shove religion on the faces of the members of the third sex, we might as well hit our faces with the religion we are so proud of. We are given free will and this does not entitle us to step unto others faces.

Though it is alarming that bisexuals are the common victims of sexually transmitted diseases, we should bear in mind that no one is exempted. We might also get the disease if we will not be careful. We should not be ignorant and remember that we should have discipline all the time.
